Mayer Needs Fans to Help Finish His Song

NEW YORK ? John Mayer has writer's block ? and he wants your help. The soft-voiced rocker is calling on fans to make a song out of some lyrics that didn't make it onto his upcoming album.

"I'm inviting all aspiring songwriters to write their own chords and melodies around my lyrics," Mayer writes in the September issue of Esquire, on newsstands Aug. 15. "You can tell people we wrote a song together."

John Mayer arrives for the American Music Awards on Nov. 14, 2004, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The soft-voiced rocker is calling on fans to make a song out of some discarded lyrics of his that didn't make it onto his upcoming album. 'I'm inviting all aspiring songwriters to write their own chords and melodies around my lyrics,' Mayer writes in the September issue of Esquire magazine, on newsstands Aug. 15. Mayer, who has written a monthly column for Esquire for more than a year, urges people to send a CD of their song to the magazine's music department. The lyrics and information on submissions, due Sept. 30, can be found in the upcoming issue.

One line reads: "I've got dreams to remember, I've got days to forget/I've got some phone calls in to God but he ain't called me back just yet."

The 27-year-old singer writes that the lyrics were left over from a tune intended for "Continuum," his third studio album. The song ended up an instrumental, so Mayer is "looking to make some use of the time and emotion I spent writing (the lyrics)."

The best submissions will be featured on Esquire's Web site. Mayer will pick the winner, who will receive a Fender John Mayer Signature Stratocaster guitar.

okay first off this sounds like a totally cool opportunity for people that just like writing music but I feel it would be just like the lame ass Limp Bizkit tryouts where if you give them a tape of your music that you have to relinquish all rights to that song which is fucked up because you wrote it damnit....what are everyones thoughts on this and will anyone try to enter.

He should just contact Dave Matthews. Hell, they're both more or less interchangable anyways.

He's concerned with three lines to a song? I can write three lines of lyric standing on my head, in about thirty seconds. He wants to make use of 'all the time that went into writing these lines'? Huh? Again, what was it, about ten minutes of work, tops?

So what is the royaly split here? or do we all just do his fucking job for hi? What is the point in being a songwriter if you have to get other people to write your songs? Go to a movie, get laid, do something to inspire yourself John Mayer, or go work in KMART.

okay I just stood on my head and these were the lyrics i came up with:

will someone please get me out of here
don't know if I can shed any more tears
my life is surrounded by punks and queers

There those are my song lyrics that came to my head when i was standing upside down ahah.. Perhaps if we all put in 3 lines then we can come up with a glitzine song medley haha
